Originally, this page was an additional outlet for my SoundCloud account. However, my remixes/re-edits eventually got me in hot water, so now this is more your normal personal place.

My professional background includes a Ph.D. in History (my dissertation dealt with Chile in the nineteenth century), a M.A. in International Studies (thesis on world music and copyright), several years broadcasting at non-commercial radio stations and retailing music, as well as a scary summer of DJing at weddings and middle school parties.

Jefferson Airplane “Today” (Cold Duck’s Back To Life extended remix) I first did this mashup of Soul II Soul and Jefferson Airplane late last year—it was a pretty straightforward affair clocking in at just over five minutes. Not long enough for my tastes, although it remains one of my favorite mixes. After listening to my remix of “Today” incessantly over the past several weeks, I decided to give it a longer treatment, and here we are.

The odd thing in reworking my rework is that I had already deleted all the original mixing files from the version I put together last year. That put me in the position of having to re-edit my own edit as a completed track (i.e., no mixing parts left) so as to extend the introductory sections of the song. Then, to create a break, I had to drop in a few somewhat complicated overdubs. Yet another lesson in Never Throw Away Your Work.

The final result here is a little rough, but I rather like that quality, since what I’m trying to do here is blend a 1960s vocal and guitar with 1990’s beats. Unpolished is the way the mix should be. I still love this mashup, and am amazed at how well Marty Balin’s vocal and Jerry Garcia’s guitar sound over the slowed-down opening beats from the “Back To Life” 12” single. To admire my navel a bit, I really think this is one of my very best remix ideas, although the shorter original mashup I did was probably better than this long version. But I really wanted to breathe more club atmosphere into “Today”….

The xx

"Just Teardrops To Me" (Cold Duck’s S.O.S. Band Pass)

One day I was listening to The xx and it suddenly sounded like they’d sampled “Just Be Good To Me” by the S.O.S. Band to create backing beats for their version of “Teardrops.” I decided to try a mash-up of the two songs, but quickly discovered that the drum patterns of the two are quite different, even though they have a similar timbre. So, I rearranged the beats in “Just” so they’d fit “Teardrops,” pulled some handclaps and a synth swell out of the S.O.S. Band’s track as well, and dubbed all this into “Teardrops.” Re-sample and process parts of The xx and, boom!, a nice dubby remix of “Teardrops.” [“Teardrops” was written and originally performed by Womack & Womack.]

Deep Dish & Anousheh Khalili vs. the Cold Duck

"Say Hello (To The Ten Lives Of Regret)"

A fairly straight-forward mashup of Anousheh Khalili’s “Ten Lives” with the song it later grew into, “Say Hello,” by Deep Dish. Although it was not planned out this way, I like how the “Ten Lives” sections mimic the vocal breaks of a lot of trance music. More than anything else though, I love the piano riff each tune is built around….

A little whimsy of mine—here I slowed a midtempo track by Beber & Teasdale down to an amble, then overdubbed J. R. R. Tolkien reading from “The Hobbit.”

Lucille Clifton meets Brian Eno & Inner Life

"The Cruel Inner Eno" (Cold Duck poetic mashup)

A mashup of Lucille Clifton reading her wonderful poem “Cruelty,” set to beats from Inner Life’s “I’m Caught Up” and melodies from portions of two tracks from Eno’s 77Million album.  This was actually slightly popular among italian users of SoundCloud back when I the track posted there.  Proof, I feel, that Italy likes its disco somewhat demented (like most of Benny Benassi’s productions).

Joan Armatrading meets Alucard

"Save Me (When Two Hearts Collide)" (Cold Duck mashup)

I got the idea for this mix watching the penultimate episode of “Oz,” which makes extremely effective use of the old folk song by Armatrading.  But I wanted an update (of course), so here I take the vocals from Armatrading’s original and dub then over an instrumental trance track by Alucard.

Oakenfold featuring Eddie Arnold

"Save The Last Smoke For Me" (Cold Duck mashup)

Here I overdub portions of various cigarette ads from long, long ago onto a music bed fashioned out of Paul Oakenfold’s “Save The Last Trance For Me.”  Some of the ads feature country music legend Eddie Arnold hawking the joys of tobacco.  I was unable to finish this mix for a long time, but then a certain bookstore canned my sad ass after a decade of hard work, and I quit smoking the same day.  Within a week I’d finished this ode to a habit long gone by….
